Last month’s successful launch of Aquarevo in Lyndhurst – a brand-new water sensitive community – marks a new era in the commercialisation of innovative residential solutions. The first of its kind in Australia, the Aquarevo development showcases research-based, industry-leading water and energy sustainability design that signals a significant reduction in domestic water consumption achieved through urban design. And it seems homebuyers can’t get enough: Aquarevo’s first release sold out within one hour.

The CRC for Water Sensitive Cities, South East Water, and Villawood properties have worked together to envision and realise this project, whose homes offer the perfect combination of liveability and sustainability. Packed with water-saving features, each home requires approximately 70% less mains water than a regular suburban house. Fundamental to the homes’ design is the use of recycled rainwater: each house catches, filters, and treats the majority of its own water supply. Informed by weather forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology, specialised, “smart” water tank technology developed by South East Water can even prepare for excessive rain by releasing water to provide the necessary tank storage space. And as well as responsible water systems, Aquarevo’s homes feature intelligent waste management and energy-creation systems.

These are innovative ideas being brought to life. And by facilitating a research synthesis workshop, the CRCWSC was involved early in Aquarevo’s planning; selected workshop-generated ideas were incorporated into the Development’s plans – and ultimately in the final product now on offer to customers.

Now, Aquarevo looks set to become an important, large scale demonstration of water sensitive city principles and technology. For both local and overseas observers, projects such as Aquarevo are incredibly valuable demonstrations: they capture key learning opportunities; and they become tangible emblems of water sensitive cities.

It’s a spectacular opportunity for climate-aware home buyers to contribute toward water sustainability in Australia, simply by choosing a home designed for this exact purpose. With such an encouraging response from customers so far, we look forward to watching them enjoy the benefits of Aquarevo for years to come.
