The CRC for Water Sensitive Cities has three major research partners: The University of Western Australia, The University of Queensland and Monash University. One of the research institutes at Monash University, the Monash Sustainable Development Institute  (MSDI), has just released its   annual impact report for 2019, outlining its research, education and innovation activities towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

MSDI Director, Professor Tony Capon, says this year’s bushfires and COVID-19 pandemic have made clear just how important human health is in sustainable development, and it will be critical that we invest to build back better.

Under SDG 6 – Clean water and sanitation, the CRCWSC works with the MSDI on the RISE (Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments) joint project to adapt and apply water sensitive principles and practices to address human health challenges in 24 informal settlements across Indonesia and Fiji. It helps address the question is: How do we get clean water and sanitation to more than a billion people living in informal settlements?

The MSDI manages the RISE project and we advise on community engagement and nature-based structural engineering solutions (such as constructed wetlands) for sanitation and clean water.

Read about the many other ways the MSDI is working with industry, civil society and governments at all levels to tackle the big global challenges we face.
