The CRCWSC had a very strong showing at the 2013 WSUD Conference. Congratulations must firstly go to the winners of the young research presenter awards. Not only did the judges decide to award five winners instead of just one, four of the five winners are directly associated with the CRCWSC. The fifth winner, Ryan Brotchie from GHD, is the industry partner contact from GHD for Victoria. A big round of applause goes to:

  • Jianbin Wang (CRC International Engagement Manager – Asia) for his paper on ‘Water sensitive development in Kunshan, China’
  • Peter Bach (PhD Candidate) for his paper entitled ‘UrbanBEATS: A strategic planning tool for exploring water sensitive futures’
  • Wenjun Feng (PhD Candidate) for his paper entitled ‘Concept of urban stormwater treatment art’
  • Bonnie Glaister (PhD Candidate) for her paper entitled ‘Long-term phosphorus accumulation in stormwater biofiltration systems at the field scale’
  • Ryan Brotchie (Water Strategy team, GHD) for his paper entitled ‘Spatial analysis in IWCM strategic planning’.
Jianbin Wang, Wenjun Feng, Peter Bach, Ryan Brotchie and Bonnie Glaister

These five presenters were joined by approximately 20 other presenters affiliated with the CRCWSC. Together they very clearly demonstrated the breadth and depth of expertise that the CRC is contributing, not only to the WSUD agenda, but to the realisation of sustainable, resilient, and liveable cities.

The 250 participants were inspired by keynote speakers that included Josh Byrne (Gardening Australia) and Bram Gunther (Chief of Forestry, Horticulture and Natural Resources; President, Natural Areas Conservancy, NYC Parks), with the latter sharing his experiences in a presentation entitled ‘Green Infrastructure in NYC’.

Other highlights are too numerous to mention here. However, copies of the abstracts from the conference can be viewed at https://www.wsud2013.org/.
