Abstract

An immediate challenge of climate change is the increased frequency, temperature and duration of heat wave events, with associated rises in mortality rates. Urban Heat Island effects exacerbate these conditions, particularly in cities with dry summers. Understanding how built form, landscape and environmental water connect to affect temperature is applied to the design of new urban forms that create Urban Cool Pools, recreational city landscapes that can serve as refuges in extreme heat events.
