Every year, the Naomi Milgrom Foundation commissions a temporary pavilion for the Queen Victoria Gardens. Each pavilion brings together creative collaborators to discuss and debate the role of design, architecture and culture in creating liveable, creative and equitable cities.

For 2017, Coolth.Inc landscaped the pavilion designed by architects Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten (OMA). Coolth.Inc provided unique and distinctive landscaping that complemented the contemporary, flexible, sheltered amphitheatre. Phil Edwards, Coolth.Inc’s founder, describes these landscaping features:

  • an angular, faceted embankment that formed the back of a semicircular tribune
  • a void former to reduce the imported topsoil volume required
  • a unique community of Australian native plants
  • structural webbing to hold the plants and soils on slopes up to 45degrees.

At the end of each program, the MPavilion is gifted to the city. MPavilion 2017’s new home is Monash University, in Melbourne’s south east.
